“Gannendo,” a restaurant specializing in 100% buckwheat soba noodles, makes its debut in Malaysia. The diversification of Japanese food is accelerating.

Gannendō, a renowned restaurant specializing in authentic 100% buckwheat soba noodles with two locations in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture, opened a new branch in Publika, Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur, on September 12, 2024. Driven by the desire to “deliver the flavors, traditions, and culture of Shizuoka, Japan, blessed by nature, to the world,” they are the first in Malaysia to offer authentic 100% buckwheat soba, a representative dish of Japanese cuisine.

The Japanese food market in Malaysia is rapidly expanding from the three dominant genres of sushi, ramen, and yakiniku to include diverse genres such as soba, udon, and oden. Mont Kiara, in particular, is known as an area where Japanese residents and affluent expatriates gather, resulting in high demand for authentic Japanese food.

The ability of small and medium-sized restaurants to directly enter the Malaysian market is due to Malaysia’s favorable investment environment, which allows for 100% foreign investment and has no minimum capital requirement.
