Japanese sake exports have reached a new record high, with demand exploding in Asia and North America.

According to the 2022 sake export data released by the National Tax Agency, export value reached a record high, increasing by 14% year-on-year. Both export volume and value have continued to expand for 10 consecutive years, demonstrating that the global “SAKE” boom is a genuine trend.

Demand growth is particularly remarkable in the Asian market. Following Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, interest in premium sake is rapidly increasing in Malaysia, along with the growing penetration of Japanese food culture. In upscale restaurants and bars in Kuala Lumpur, carefully selected sake brands are becoming established on menus alongside wine.

Sake is a “liquid art” created from four elements: rice, water, koji (rice malt), and the skill of the craftsman. Its complex flavor and diverse styles—Daiginjo, Junmai, Sparkling, etc.—are attracting sommeliers and gourmets worldwide. Our organization is actively working to support sake exports to the Malaysian market.
